Candy has doubts over Limato

Trainer Henry Candy feels Limato might struggle to compete over just five furlongs in Friday’s Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes.

The four-year-old is set to drop back to five furlongs for the first time in his career in the York showpiece after making a name for himself over longer trips.

The son of Tagula has scored many times over six furlongs and was last seen winning Newmarket‘s Darley July Cup, having performed well in finishing fourth over a mile at Doncaster earlier in the year.

Connections have opted to supplement the gelding for Friday’s Knavesmire challenge but Candy is not so sure that it was a wise decision.

“I’m in favour of giving it a try, but I’m not at all confident. I think a very fast, very flat five (furlongs) might just find him out, but it’s worth a try. He’ll run well,” said the Wantage-based handler.

“Good horses do different things. Good old trainers used to say if they had a really good Derby winner it would win the July Cup. I know this is in reverse, but I think it’s fairly true.”
